GLP-1
What Happens After GLP-1 Treatment Stops?
The STEP 1 extension followed participants after treatment withdrawal and found substantial average weight regain. The finding describes a cohort, not an individual destiny.
Why the distinction matters
Stopping is a decision people make, and the evidence about stopping is frequently quoted at them as either a warning or a permission. It is neither. It is an observation about what a specific trial population did on average after treatment was withdrawn.
What the source actually reports
- One year after withdrawal, participants regained approximately two-thirds of their prior mean weight loss.
- Cardiometabolic variables also moved back toward baseline.
Two observations reported by the off-treatment extension one year after treatment withdrawal in the STEP 1 population.

What this can support
- Understanding that treatment withdrawal was followed and measured, not assumed.
- Framing a conversation about what happens after, before treatment begins.
What it cannot support
- Telling any reader to continue or discontinue medication.
- Tapering, dose or maintenance instructions.
- Predicting what any individual would regain or retain.
Questions to take to a licensed clinician
- 01If treatment ever stops, what is the plan, and who monitors it?
- 02What would we measure after stopping, and over what period?
- 03How does this evidence apply — or not apply — to my situation?
Decisions about starting, continuing, changing or stopping any medication belong with an appropriate licensed clinician who knows your history.

GLP-1 medications can be effective. The difference between trial outcomes and everyday outcomes often exposes an execution and adherence problem.
